The Story Behind the Book
Little girls have big dreams, and I was certainly no exception. My dream was to write
a book. I filled notebook after spiral-bound notebook with my stories, longing for
the day when people I didn’t even know would want to read what I had written. But
as I grew up, then got married, and then began having children, I began to wonder
whether my dream would ever happen.
My first child, Ellie, was 18 months old when Kenny was born. Though I tried not
to compare Kenny to his sister, it soon became obvious that something was different
about our second child. His development was not normal. Something was wrong. Later,
we learned that that “something” has a name. It’s called Asperger’s Disorder.
At the time, I was regularly visiting an online support group for children born in the same month as Kenny. Within the larger group, there was a smaller thread for Christian mommies. These women were incredibly encouraging to me as I began learning how to raise my special needs child. As a way to encourage them in return, I began offering weekly devotionals. These precious mommies were the first who suggested, “Hey, you should write a book.”
I’d love to, I thought, though I honestly didn’t see how it would ever happen. But
the little girl I used to be still lived inside me, and she still had a dream. So
I kept writing, even starting a website, where I made my weekly devotions available
to encourage other moms who visited the site. I stored the devotions in a folder
on my computer marked “Devotions for Book.” Maybe someday, I thought.
And then…“someday” came. As the result of attending a Christian writer’s conference, I sold my manuscript to Regal Books. Less than 8 months later, the book was at the printer’s. I was amazed at the speed with which everything happened. I didn’t know the speed was absolutely essential.
You see, little boys have big dreams, too. My son Kenny dreams of growing up to be
strong, smart, capable, and admired. The only problem is that with his Asperger’s,
his chances of reaching that dream will be limited without quite a bit of therapy.
My husband and I found a program for Kenny that is perfect for him. Already, it’s
done Kenny a world of good. But even though it’s non-profit, it isn’t cheap, because
our insurance won’t cover Kenny’s treatments.
I know You’ll provide, Lord, I thought. But how?
And then I realized what an incredible thing God had done. He had provided the money
Kenny needed by fulfilling my dream. God used one circumstance to make both of our
dreams—Kenny’s and mine—a reality, because with the money I earn from book sales,
I can pay for the therapy my son needs. With this therapy, Kenny will gain the skills
he needs to navigate society, so that others will see him as he wants to be seen:
strong, smart, capable, and admirable. I only hope Kenny knows that that’s the way
I already see him. Because, as I tell him every night when I tuck him in, he’s my
dream of a son.
